I met this girl...

"I had a plan. Admittedly, not a good plan, or one of my most brilliant, but a plan nonetheless. The most sensible plan I’d come up with in a long time. A plan that would make amends for everything I had ever done wrong in my life.

I was going to call my superiors, to let them know I had failed to complete a major assignment. Then I was going to drive back to my hotel, have a decent dinner I would probably pay too much for, and blow my brains out.

. . . .

I had a plan. I was going to follow through with it. For once in my life, I knew I was doing the right thing. The atrocities I had already committed could not be undone. But I could ensure that no more took place. I had a plan. No one could stop me. I wasn’t going to let them.

Then I met this girl. And she completely fucked up all of my plans."

The words are an excerpt from my literary opus, “Out of Nowhere.” The image is of its central characters: Alec, the narrator of the excerpt you read above, and Carly, the woman who so effortlessly usurps the course of his universe.

I’ve done several drawing of these two, but this one, in charcoal, is one of my favorites. I seldom let myself draw elegant depictions like this one, and I enjoyed doing this immensely.

The portrait, like most of my other charcoal work, was done on the overnight shift of my job as a call center internet-repair person. Reference used.
